Detroit , Mich. – In honor of Earth Day 2006, GM is participating in a number of environmentally-focused events and activities around the country. As part of this, the company is building on its existing “Live Green Go Yellow” campaign to promote the use of the cleaner-burning alternative fuel, E85 ethanol, with a special Earth Day advertising campaign and E85 ethanol fueling partnership announcement in the state of Michigan today.
“Among GM’s Environmental Principles is the commitment to creating products and a business that respect the environment,” said Elizabeth A. Lowery, GM Vice President of Environment and Energy. “As a company, we work hard to honor those principles in all of our operations and we will continue to encourage the whole GM family – employees, suppliers, dealers – to honor Earth Day every day.”

At the beginning of this year, GM launched its major marketing and advertising campaign, “Live Green Go Yellow,” to educate the public on the benefits of using E85 ethanol and to help grow the fueling infrastructure around the nation. So far this year, GM has forged partnerships with E85 fuel providers and retailers in four states to increase the availability of the fuel in those areas. For the week leading up to Earth Day 2006 (April 15 – April 22), GM is running special advertising to drive the public to www.livegreengoyellow.com to learn more about the fuel and ways in which people can make a difference in honor of Earth Day. Ads are running in broadcast and print outlets, as well as online. GM is also the sole sponsor of “Green Week” on America Online (AOL) which runs April 15-22.

GM’s vehicle brands, manufacturing facilities and corporate activities are also recognizing Earth Day 2006 with a variety of initiatives. On the brand side, Saturn is sponsoring the Green Apple Music Festival in New York City featuring live music in over 30 venues around the city, and an Earth Fair showcasing environmental displays and demonstrations from a variety of organizations. Saturn’s new hybrid vehicle, the 2007 Saturn VUE Green Line, will be on display and product experts will be on hand to talk with the public. The new vehicle is expected to achieve an estimated 27 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, the best highway mileage of any SUV.

GM’s manufacturing facilities around the country are hosting a variety of activities designed to educate employees and the public on various environmental issues and the ways in which GM manages the impact of its operations on the environment. Topics include E85 ethanol as well as things like recycling, and soil and water conservation.

In Detroit, home to GM’s world headquarters, GM will participate in Earth Day activities at the New Detroit Science Center with a hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle display and information on GM’s research and development efforts in this future transportation arena. Additionally, GM will place a focus on this technology again at the end of the month when it sponsors the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl and hosts a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle ride and drive and hydrogen fuel cell model car challenge for student participants.

Other activities around the country include participation in various conferences and events with speakers and displays focused on GM’s environmental efforts. For more information on GM’s Earth Day initiatives around the U.S. and Canada, please visit www.gmability.com/environment.
